GRAMMAR

In Norwegian, GENERAL TIME PERIODS are written with the
preposition "om" plus the noun in the definite form.

om morgenen       (during the morning)
om formiddagen    (during the forenoon)
om ettermiddagen  (during the afternoon)
om kvelden        (during the evening)
om natten         (during the night)

om sommeren       (during the summer)
om høsten        (during the fall)
om vinteren       (during the winter)
om våren         (during the spring)

* i fritida       (during my free time)
* i helgene       (during the weekends)

(* These expressions use the preposition "i" rather than "om.")

We use these general time periods when we are:

1) describing activities which we usually or habitually do.

   ex.) Jeg spiller basketball om vinteren.
        (I play basketball during the winter.)

        Jeg arbeider ikke om sommeren.
        (I don't work during the summer.)

2) narrating in the past tense.

   ex.)  Jeg dro til universitetet om formiddagen og leste
         på biblioteket.
         (I went to the university during the forenoon and
          studied at the library.)

         Om ettermiddagen arbeidet jeg på språklaboratoriet.
         (During the afternoon, I worked at the language lab.)

         Jeg slappet av om kvelden.
         (I relaxed during the evening.)

God dag, jeg heter Joachim. Foreldrene mine heter Reinhold og
Janice. Faren min er fra Tyskland. Han kom til Amerika i 1955. I
1965 traff han moren min ved Roosevelt University i Chicago. Hun
er fra staten Ohio. Jeg er født i 1972. Foreldrene mine er
seksti år gamle nå. Tre av besteforeldrene mine er døde, men
min morfar lever ennå.  Han er åttifem år gammel, kanskje mer
nå. Jeg har to halv-brødre. Todd bor i Nashua i staten New
Hampshire -- tjue minutter fra hvor jeg bor i Chelmsford i staten
Massachusetts. Jeg besøker ham ofte.
