CULTURE CORNER:
"God dag, og velkommen til NorWord!" It is good to be back, and
I hope that each of you has had a good summer so far. The way in
which we spend our summers varies according to our personal
interests, our jobs, and the countries in which we live. In
Norway, everyone receives four weeks of paid vacation, and many
people take a good portion of their vacation in July, which is
called "fellesferie (common vacation)". During their vacations,
Norwegians often go to cabins in the mountains or by the sea, and
spend time in the outdoors hiking, fishing, swimming, windsurfing,
boating, etc. Camping, car trips or package tours in Norway,
Scandinavia, and Europe are also popular.
In this Culture Corner, I hope we will be able to learn some
new things about Norwegian culture while reflecting on our own
cultural background. We are a diverse group, currently 1207
subscribers from 37 countries. Below is a list of the countries
in Norwegian, divided by continent.
Afrika: Sør-Afrika
Asia: Filippinene Hong Kong India Isræl
Japan Kina Malaysia Taiwan
Australia: Australia New Zealand
Europa: Belgia Danmark Finland Frankrike
Hellas Irland Italia Kroatia
Luxemburg Nederland Norge Polen
Portugal Storbritannia Sveits Sverige
Tsjekkia * Tyrkia Tyskland Ungarn
Oesterrike
Nord-Amerika: Canada Costa Rica Mexico USA
Sør-Amerika: Argentina Brasil
* The Czech Republic is called "Tsjekkia" by the Norwegians, but
one of our subscribers from that country wrote to say that
people there would prefer "Den tjekkiske republikk."
