GRAMMATIKK (Grammar):

1. BASIC WORD ORDER in Norwegian closely parallels English.

   SUBJECT --- VERB
   Jeg snakker norsk.
   (I speak Norwegian.)

2. NEGATION occurs when the word "ikke" (not) is in the sentence.

Normally, the word "ikke" is placed after the verb.

ex.) Jeg spiller IKKE golf. (I don't play golf.)
Jeg liker IKKE å sykle. (I don't like to bicycle.)

If there are two parts to the verb (helping verb + infinitive),
then "ikke" comes between the two parts.

ex.) Jeg kan IKKE lese nå. (I can't study now.)
Jeg skal IKKE arbeide nå. (I'm not going to work now.)

3. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS combine two independent clauses, and
they help writing become more connected and less choppy. They
are easy to use, since they cause no changes in word order.

                og (and) men (but)

   Sola skinner. Det er varmt.
Sola skinner, OG det er varmt.

Sola skinner om sommeren. Det stormer ofte også.
Sola skinner om sommeren, MEN det stormer ofte også.

4. In Norwegian, there is INVERSION of the subject and the verb
whenever the sentence starts with an adverbial. Adverbials can
indicate time, place, contrast, etc. We put adverbials first
in the sentence to give them emphasis or to vary writing style.
In the examples below, the subject and the verb are in capital
   letters.

Normal Word Order: DET STORMER ofte om sommeren.
(It storms often during the summer.)

Inverted Word Order: Om sommeren STORMER DET ofte.
(During the summer, it storms often.

LEKSEHJØRNE (Homework Corner):

In this section, we will give you a homework assignment to be
done in Norwegian each week. These assignments are optional, but
they are a good way for you to practice your Norwegian. If you
send your homework to me , I will correct it
and include it in a future NorWord lesson.

New subscribers or people who have not contributed homework
before: Write a short paragraph describing yourself (name, age,
hometown, place of residence, work/school, leisure activities, etc.)

Beginners/Intermediate/Advanced: Write a short paragraph
describing what you have been doing this summer (name, residence,
summer activities, summer weather, etc.). This assignment will be
written in past tense, so be careful with the verb forms. (For
beginners, this will be difficult, so just write a few sentences
or ask me some questions about past tense forms.)

Native Norwegians of any age: If you are a native Norwegian, we
would very much appreciate it if you would write a short
paragraph on either of the two assignments listed above. Or if
you have a friend, spouse, neighbor, etc. who is native Norwegian,
please encourage them to write. These texts provide the other
subscribers with a model for their writing as well as some
insight into the daily lives of Norwegians.
