CULTURE:

Norway and other countries:

* Norway has strong ties to the U.S. and Canada, dating back to the
previous century when nearly one million Norwegian immigrants traveled
across the ocean to "Amerika."
* Norway is a member of NATO and plays a strategic role in Western defense.
* Norway cooperates with the other Nordic countries on a variety of issues
through the agreements made by the Nordic council. Some of these
agreements are in jeopardy now that some of the other Nordic countries
have become members in the European Union.
* In 1972 and in 1994, Norway held national referendums and rejected
membership in the European Union. Norway is still associated with the EU
through the EFTA agreements.
* Norway gives the most money per capita to developing countries, and they
send a small army of international relief workers and Christian missionaries
to foreign countries every year.
* In the past, Norway has been a relatively homogeneous country, with the
main exception being the Sami people who originally settled in Northern
Norway. In recent years, Norway has received an influx of foreign workers
and refugees.
The majority of the immigrants come from Denmark (21,000), Sweden (19,000),
USA (15,000), Great Britain (15,000), Pakistan (10,000), Germany (8,000),
Vietnam (7,000), Chile (5,000), South Korea (5,000), Turkey (4500), and
Iran (4000).
