NORWORD SUMMER SCHEDULE:

May 22-28: Sports and Outdoor Life
May 29 - June 4: Family
June 5-11: Daily Activities
June 12-18: Summer
June 19 - Aug. 3: No NorWord lessons

This summer, Louis and I plan to take a six week break from
sending NorWord lessons from June 19 - August 3. During the
break, we plan first of all (like good Norwegians) to take a
vacation, but then we will be trying to evaluate the NorWord
project, obtain some funding for the project, write the NorWord
lessons for the rest of the summer and fall (no more late night
sessions at the computer!) and to develop some products which we
think might be useful to you. Since it is so difficult to teach
pronunciation via e-mail, we are considering making a tape which
would contain the words, phrases, and some texts written by
subscribers from the first 12 weeks of the NorWord lessons. We
also thought it would be fun to make a NorWord t-shirt or
sweatshirt.

Out of date information
We would appreciate it if you would send an e-mail to me
and give us some feedback on the following
areas (we accept all types of responses -- short, long, in
English or Norwegian!):

1) What do you think about the length, content, and effectiveness
of the NorWord lessons in general?

2) Are the themes we have chosen useful to you? Are there
themes or words which you would especially like to cover?

3) Do you have comments on any of the other NorWord sections:
grammar, culture, subscriber contributions, book corner?

1) Do you correspond with any of the other NorWord subscribers?
If so, how did you first make the connection with them?

4) Would you be interested in purchasing a tape which corresponded
to the first 12 weeks of the NorWord lessons? We haven't
checked on costs yet, but it would probably be between $7-10.

5) Would you be interested in buying a NorWord t-shirt or
sweatshirt? Would you like to submit a design for it?

6) Other comments or questions?

BOOK CORNER:

Today, we will present the beginning Norwegian books which are
written for foreign students in Norway. These books are written
completely in Norwegian, including the directions and grammar
explanations, so they are most appropriate for use in the
classroom, with a tutor, or in combination with a self-study book.

Out of date information:
These books are available from the Norwegian Bookshop in Oslo.
You can order these books via e-mail, fax, telephone, or mail.

NY I NORGE.
Gerd Manne. Forlaget Fag og Kultur.
Textbook ($30.00, ISBN 8211001233),
Workbook ($26.00, ISBN 8211001241),
Cassettes, 1-4 ($82.00, ISBN 8211001365)
Glossary ($15.00, Specify language, Norwegian-English,
                 Norwegian-French, Norwegian-Spanish, etc.)

NY I NORGE is a complete beginning textbook package, including
a textbook, workbook, tapes, and glossary. The package is based
on a communicative approach to language learning, meaning that
the parts of a language such as grammar and vocabulary are taught
in the context of the global skills such as reading, speaking,
listening, and writing. There are 30 chapters in the textbook,
focusing on everday themes, such as identity, family, daily
activities, meals, etc. Each chapter starts with an overview of
common phrases and vocabulary related to the theme, continues
with two or three texts (dialogs and descriptions), and ends
with a pronunciation lesson and a grammar overview. The
pronunciation lessons include information on the sounds and
word stress, and the grammar is presented with charts and
examples, but no explanations. In the back of the book, there is
a chapter-by-chapter word list with information on pronunciation
and there is also an alphabetical word list with information on
grammatical forms. Norwegian-English glossaries and glossaries
with Norwegian - to many other languages have to be purchased
separately. There is also a 10 page grammar appendix with
charts and examples which covers all the major grammar topics.
The workbook contains a variety of exercises, including questions
about the main texts, grammar and vocabulary exercises, and
communicative exercises. I like this book a lot, especially the
clear layout and use of illustrations, the variety and quantity
of vocabulary, the natural language in the texts, the varied
exercises in the workbook, and the high quality of the cassettes.

NORSK FOR UTLENDINGER 1
Aase-Berit and Rolf Strandskogen. Gyldendal Norsk Forlag.
Beginning Book 1 (textbook and workbook in one book, $33.00,
                  ISBN 8205185573)
Glossary ($7.00, ISBN 8205208247)
Cassettes, 1-2 ($48.00, ISBN 8205194254)

Beginning Book 2 (textbook and workbook in one book, $28.00,
                  ISBN 8205102945)
Oral Exercise Book ($20.00, ISBN 8205135177)
Oral Exercises, Cassettes 1-4 ($105.00, ISBN 8205135878)

Beginning Book 3 (textbook and workbook in one book, $27.00
                  ISBN 8205126801)

This textbook package is divided into three beginning books
(textbook and workbook together), and it also includes glossaries,
cassettes, and special oral exercises at the second and third
level. Norsk for utlendinger 1, the first book in this beginning
series, has 17 chapters which are organized around common themes
such as identity, travel, entertainment, food, etc. The
textbook/workbook combination includes short texts (dialogs and
descriptions), grammar and pronunciation explanations and many
exercises, mostly fill in the blank and answer the question. The
texts are very good with natural-sounding language, and the
pronunciation lessons are very thorough and excellent, covering
the Norwegian sound system, stress, tones, and sentence intonation.
I like the quantity of the grammar exercises, especially the
review that comes after every second chapter, but I would like
to see more communicative exercises. The grammar progression
moves relatively fast, and there are both explanations, charts,
and examples. In the back of the book, there is an appendix
showing the verb forms, but there is not a word list of any sort.
I haven't heard the tapes that go with this book, but would
assume that they are of excellent quality. Aase-Berit
Strandskogen is a well-known teacher in the University of Oslo
Norwegian courses for foreigners, and her specialty is
pronunciation.

TROLL I ORD.
Anne Bjørnebek. Aschehoug.
Textbook ($28.00, ISBN 8203135005)
Workbook (with answers to exercises) ($22.00, ISBN 8203137318)
Cassettes ($60.00, ISBN 8203281982)

This book stands out from the other elementary Norwegian books in
that the language lessons are woven into a spy story. The action
takes place from Kristiansand to Kirkenes and Svalbard. All
readings and excercises are entirely in Norwegian, although a
glossary provided. There are readings, fill in the blanks (with
most answers in the column to the right of the exercise). Chapters
include short dialogs (presenting clues) and reading passages,
lists of vocabulary introduced, suggestions for oral work in the
classroom, and charts of grammar. There is also a workbook with
a variety of exercises, and it also includes answers to the
exercises! This book would be enjoyable for someone with a
moderate basis in Norwegian, but it is most appropriate for use
in a classroom, with a tutor, or with another self-study book.
A cassette with oral exercises, pronunciation and the text read
in is available (but I have not heard it).
